As a military family, we’ve moved every 2–3 years, and with each move, our crew has grown with more kids, more pets, and definitely more stuff. Every relocation has come with its own version of chaos, but over time, we’ve learned what helps make each transition smoother.

Whether you’re brand new in town or a seasoned PCS pro, this checklist is packed with the real-life steps we take to get organized, help our kids adjust, and start feeling at home in each new place faster and with way less stress.

  • Locate nearest grocery stores, gas stations, and coffee shops
  • Register with a primary care doctor/pediatrician and pharmacy
  • Research local dentists, specialists, and therapists
  • Identify nearest hospital and emergency services (just in case)
  • Locate a vet and/or pet emergency clinic
  • Visit new school(s) and complete enrollment
  • Find reliable before/after school care programs or daycare if needed
  • Locate your nearest post office

Routine & Scheduling

  • Set up your shared family shared calendar
  • Add school breaks, early dismissals, events
  • Schedule new appointments (doctor, vet, haircuts)
  • Map daily routes (school drop-offs, commutes)
  • Save all the phone numbers you’ll need

Home Setup & Comfort

  • Unpack daily essentials (kitchen, bathrooms, clothes)
  • Create a drop zone for bags, shoes, and keys
  • Set up kids’ rooms and routines for familiarity
  • Set up a command center (calendar, paperwork station)

  • Find your go-to coffee shop
  • Check out local parks, trails, playgrounds
  • Visit thrift stores or small businesses
  • Look up community events and markets
  • Join local Facebook groups or mom communities
  • Introduce yourself to one neighbor
  • Find a local gym, class, or hobby

For the Kids

  • Locate libraries, playgrounds, splash pads
  • Explore one NEW playground each week

  • Let them help pick a “new family hangout”
  • Set up a chore chart to bring back structure

Final Thoughts

Remind yourself: Home is coming, give it time

FAQ: New City Checklist

How do I help my kids adjust after moving to a new city?

Help your kids feel more comfortable by setting up familiar routines right away. Explore local parks and playgrounds together, and let them choose a “new family hangout” spot. Keep checking in on how they’re feeling about the move and open communication makes a huge difference.

What are the first things to do when moving to a new city?

Start by locating essential services like grocery stores, hospitals, pharmacies, schools, and your nearest coffee shop (trust me, you’ll need it!). Set up your home with daily-use items first, create a family calendar, and explore your new neighborhood to get oriented.

How can I make a new city feel like home faster?

Focus on unpacking the essentials and creating cozy, functional spaces for your family. Find a local coffee shop, park, or farmers market that can become part of your new routine. Joining community groups or attending local events can help you feel connected more quickly.

How do military families stay organized during a PCS move?

Military families often stay organized by using shared digital calendars, labeled bins, and detailed checklists for each stage of the move. Planning routines early, building in flexibility, and focusing on small wins help ease the transition and reduce stress.
