The Shift in This Season of Motherhood

There’s something bittersweet about realizing you’ve entered a new chapter in motherhood. The baby and toddler years and the sleepless nights, diaper changes, constant carrying, and endless “Mama, help me” moments start to quietly slip away. And now, here I am with three kids ages 5, 8, and 11, officially out of the baby stage and fully into the season where they should do more for themselves.

Our youngest just started kindergarten, and it’s been a milestone I’ve both celebrated and wrestled with emotionally. The house is quieter for parts of the day. My hands aren’t always full. I can drink a cup of coffee while it’s still hot or not watered down. I can leave the room without a small person trailing behind me. And yet, along with this newfound independence comes an unexpected weight of guilt.

Doing More

Somehow, as mothers, we’ve been conditioned to believe that if we’re not giving every ounce of ourselves to our kids, we’re falling short. That if we take time for ourselves, whether it’s to go for a walk, have a hobby, meet a friend for lunch, or just sit in peace, we’re being selfish. But here’s the truth: motherhood is not meant to erase our identity.

The shift from being needed for everything to being able to step back is a natural progression. It doesn’t mean we love our kids any less, it means we’re teaching them to grow, to be capable, and to trust themselves. Asking them to pour their own drink, tie their own shoes, or start their own homework isn’t lazy parenting; it’s preparing them for life.

Making Space for Ourselves

Now that we’re out of the toddler trenches, I’m learning to give myself permission to fill my own cup literally and figuratively. That might mean going out to grab a coffee, starting a new project, or just going shopping alone. It’s a shift that brings freedom, but also the reminder that I am more than just “Mom.”

And when we take care of ourselves, our patience grows, our energy increases, and our joy spills over into our families. Our kids see us living life, chasing passions, and caring for ourselves, and that’s one of the greatest lessons we can give them.

This new season is proof that motherhood is not just about holding on, but also about letting go in little ways. Our babies grow, and so do we. And maybe, just maybe, it’s okay to embrace the space they give us.
