Moving to a New City With Kids and Pets
Moving to a new city is always an adventure… and by “adventure,” I mean chaotic, disorienting, and full of moments like, “Where even is the grocery store?” Add kids, pets, and a job (or two), and it’s a miracle if you remember where you packed the can opener.
As a military family, we’ve done this many times. Every move is different, but one thing stays the same: it takes time to feel settled. Here’s what helps us find our footing.
1. Get Lost (On Purpose)
Once you’re semi-unpacked, load up the crew, grab a yummy beverage (or coffee!), and drive. No destination, just explore. Find the parks, schools, grocery stores, and those hidden gems you’ll love.
2. Map Out the Big 5
Your first weeks will go smoother if you know where to go for:
- Coffee shops & thrift stores
- School or daycare
- Grocery store
- Pediatrician/urgent care/ER
- Vet/Emergency animal clinic
Save these in your phone, and do a quick drive-by so it’s familiar before you need it in a pinch.
3. Be Awkward (Say Hello Anyway)
Making friends as an adult is hard, but worth it. That mom at the park? The barista who smiles? The neighbor who waves? Say hi. Ask for tips. One hello can lead to a playdate or coffee invite that makes your day.
4. Let the Kids Help Explore
Moving is tough on kids. Include them:
- Try a new playground each weekend
- Go on a neighborhood “treasure hunt” walk
- Let them choose a new pizza or ice cream spot
The more involved they feel, the faster it feels like their home too.
5. Don’t Forget the Pets
Help your pets settle too:
- Find a new vet
- Discover dog parks or pet-friendly trails
- Locate grooming or boarding spots
New routines help ease pet anxiety during the transition.
6. Give Everyone Time
Adjusting takes time. Kids will act out. Pets may regress. You’ll feel lost. That’s normal. Give yourself grace. Takeout is fine. Forgetting your new ZIP code? Also fine.
7. Find Your Happy Spots
Nothing makes a new place feel like home faster than discovering your happy places. For me:
☕ Coffee shops
🛍️ Thrift stores, Goodwill, or Target
These spots give me comfort, connection, and a sense of belonging, plus, a break from the kids and a deep breath could be exactly what I (you) need…
